Why Matariki is important

Why Matariki is important

Matariki is an important time of Māori  culture. It is the new year where they harvest crops like kumara. Next people remember loved ones who have past away and people set goals.

First we prepare for the year ahead by harvesting kumara and other crops and replanting. When it is matariki people have feast like hāngīs.

Secondly people have time to remember who has past away and remember loved ones as well. People tell stories about the seven stars.

Finally people set goals for the year to succeed and people try new things.

The reason matariki is so important because it celebrates Māori culture and the Māori new year with lot’s to do. That's why I think matariki is so important.

  1. Hi Lachlan it is Micah from St. Bernadette School in Room 8,
I just like to say great job on your writing the part I really liked was your intro. I like how you used apropiate words for your paragraphs. All you need is a diagram.

Looking forward on reading more of your writing.
